Bordetella and what it means for your business

Bordetella is up there with one of the most problematic issues kennels and daycares will experience. This bacterial infection can be less than pleasing for dogs and business owners alike.

Bordetella bronchiseptica is the most common bacteria which causes canine cough. This affects dogs upper respiratory system and can cause coughing and flu like symptoms. Canine Cough itself is not fatal however it can lead to secondary infection that may be more serious.

Canine cough exhibits in dogs through a honking sound that is the most distinctive sign. They may experience other symptoms such as; loss of appetite, lethargy, runny nose and general coughing.

If you suspect a dog within your facility has canine cough it is important to quarantine them immediately. Canine cough is highly contagious and is air borne so can be passed through simply barking! Ask the owner to collect immediately and ask for vet approval before they attend your daycare or kennel again.

A deep clean is important should you have an outbreak however it may be wise to remove all toys during this period to avoid the spread of infection. It is also important to change water bowls regularly and boil wash all bedding with pet disinfectant.

Although this can be less than pleasant and problematic, it is very curable and should take no more than 2-3 week to run its course.
